On July 22, 2010 the project finalized the activity of mounting satellite transmitters on six birds, which will help track their movement for minimum one year providing important information about their range and habitat use, as well as migration routes and wintering sites beginning with autumn. After the beginning of the migration period in September, it will be possible to track the movement of the birds on the project website www.pomarina.ro, currently under construction.
Out of those six transmitters, three are mounted on adult birds and the other three on youngsters. All the successfully marked individuals were captured in the Special Protected Area „Podişul Hârtibaciului”. The activity of mounting the transmitters on the birds was anything but an easy task. The experts who completed this activity spent 14 consecutive days in the forest enduring heat, rain and mosquitoes attacks, from early in the morning until late in the evening, waiting for the aquila to be caught in the bird net.
This activity implied for the experts of Milvus association field work for identifying the nests with chicks, placing the special net for capturing birds and the artificial bird used as bait (a cardboard owl), the actual capturing of the birds and mounting the transmitters, marking with aluminum and color rings (with code numbers) and painting wing feathers, collecting data about the birds’ health and finally letting them free.
The experts who ensured the success of this activity are members of Milvus association, together with a specialist in satellite tracking of birds, Mr. Dr. Ferenc Kósa, professor at the Faculty of Biology and Geology of Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca. The success of this activity was also supported by members of the REPA Sibiu team and the volunteers working with Milvus.
